Gender differences in fruit machine gamblers

The purpose of this article is to study sex differences in pathological fruit machine gamblers. The sample used consists of 150 individuals (13 women and 137 men) who sought treatment between January 2002 and December 2003 at 5 Addictive Behaviour Treatment Centres within the Valencia Region. Sociodemographic, addictive, substance consumption and psychopathological variables have been studied. The tools used to undertake the study were clinical interviews and the following questionnaires: SOGS, STAI, BDI and CBA. Statistically important differences were found regarding lifestyle (women live either alone, with children or in sheltered accommodation) and work situation (women are unemployed, housewives or have unskilled or semiskilled jobs). With regard to psychopathological variables, women show higher levels of depression than men. This difference may be due to unstable socioeconomic situations and lack of support. It may also reflect the trend in the general population. It is necessary to carry out new clinical studies in order to study sex differences in greater depth and to evaluate whether mood disorders are premorbid or secondary to pathological gambling. All this is aimed at optimizing treatment procedures.References
