Abstract

This study evaluated differences on alcohol intoxication, abuse and dependence between men and women in a sample of 910 university students. Data were collected with the questionnaire on level of alcohol-related problems. It was used a control and cases design and the analysis was made in terms of relative risks. Results showed (1) men have a greater risk of alcohol intoxication, abuse and dependence under occasional, light and moderate consumption; (2) women have a greater risk of the same alcohol-related problems under heavy consumption; (3) these problems increase directly with the increase in consumption both in men and women; (4) women exhibit a greater risk of physiological signs of intoxication and men present a greater risk of selfcontrol loss as a sign of dependence; all of these with an a £ .05. These findings allow us to understand better alcohol actions on the human body and its different effects on each gender.
